Opencat - Open-Source Robotic Pet Framework for Affordable Robots

OpenCat is the open-source Arduino-based robotic pet framework developed by Petoi, the maker of futuristic programmable robotic pets for everyone.

Goal

OpenCat's goal is to foster collaboration in agile and affordable quadruped robotic research and development, bring STEM & robotics concepts to the mass and inspire newcomers (including a lot of kids) to join the robotic AI revolution.

Quadruped robotic systems have been very complex.  Yet Petoi has chosen to open source our work that have enabled mass production and brought down the hardware and software cost to inspire more people to create their own four-legged creatures and advance the research and AI-powered applications of quadruped robotic systems.

The Journey

Inspired by Boston Dynamics' Big Dog, Petoi's founder & CEO Rongzhong Li started the Opencat project in his dorm room in 2016. After one year of R&D, he founded Petoi LLC and devoted all his resources to the startup.

Production

OpenCat has been deployed on Petoi's palm-sized, realistic lifelike robot cat Nybble and robot dog Bittle that can run, walk, and self-balance like a real animal. We've successfully crowdfunded these two robots and bringing them to the market.

The two robots on the left side are robot dog Bittle and robot cat Nybble.  The rest of the robots are early prototypes based on OpenCat.

With our customized Arduino board coordinating all instinctive and sophisticated movements, one can clip on various sensors to bring in perception and inject artificial intelligence capabilities by mounting a Raspberry Pi or other AI chips through wired/wireless connections.

Community

OpenCat has been featured in numerous open source, industrial and academic communities:

Opencat's Github project has received over 1500 stars(including an older version of OpenCat).
