Today, we take a look at the latest flexible and practical career learning path developed by Tech Cornwall while also seeing how Tech Cornwall is integrating Petoi coding robots as part of their youth and adult programs.
Career Pathways: A Flexible Route into Tech
In September 2024, Tech Cornwall launched its Career Pathways Program, a free, flexible tech course that helps learners:
- Upskill for better career opportunities
- Retrain for roles in tech, clean energy, or space industries
- Learn at their own pace without the cost or commitment of traditional education
Here are the achievements of its first cohort:
- A perfect gender balance (50% male, 50% female).
- A wide range of age diversity—from learners in their 20s to those in their 60s.
- Varied professional backgrounds, reinforcing Tech Cornwall’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Holly Patton, Tech Cornwall’s Director & Co-CEO, highlights the program’s blend of accredited learning and hands-on industry collaboration, making it a model for scalable, future-ready workforce development.
Tech Cornwall’s model is proving there’s a faster, more flexible way to build real-world tech skills—without waiting years for traditional routes to catch up. As Holly Patton (the director & co-CEO of Tech Cornwall) puts it, their approach blends accredited training with hands-on industry engagement, making it both effective and future-ready. With continued support, it could scale to power not just the tech sector, but Cornwall’s broader economy—from clean energy to space and beyond.
Youth Program: Inspiring Young Innovators with Robotics
The Tech Cornwall youth program, spearheaded by Youth Programme Coordinator Robert Wiltshire, comes to life during summer breaks with engaging, hands-on coding sessions for children. A core component of these sessions is the use of Bittle X programmable Robot Dogs to teach robotics programming.
Robert Wiltshire shared this tremendous result with us:
The dogs have proved really popular. I had two 9 year olds spend 3 hours on coding them. Keep up the good work.
Upcoming Robotic Coding Workshops (Free to Attend)
